I just read about your new treatments starting on Thanksgiving Day. I have forwarded your most recent update to those I know who will also be praying for you. We pray Gods graces on you and the treatment. God is a powerful God and NOthING is TOO MUCH for Him. Debbie I dont understand God's requiring you to travel the path you are on but I know there is one and it will give Him the glory. He has given me a peace concerning you ... OH! I will be sending (email) of Todays newly taken Christmas Pictures. I wanted to have them in the mail but sickness has had us house bound for the last 9 days. One of the items featured Jaime Buck's three-day, sixty-mile walk to raise money for breast cancer research. Your name, Debbie, was among those she is honoring with her walk. To my great delight, a beautiful picture of the three of you accompanied the article. And so I am prompted to write again to tell you that Richard and I keep you Debbie, Dewey and Aurora in our hearts and in our prayers. Hi, Debbie - I'm so sorry I've been out of touch. Your parents forwarded your message to me, and I was glad for the update, details of your therapy (sounds exciting and very promising!), and your needs. My husband and I will prayerfully consider what we can do to help. You and your family remain in my prayers every day. I'm in a clinical trial in Birmingham at UAB. The drug is an oral growth inhibitor which works kind of like Herceptin. I've been on it for 6 weeks and this week I'll find out if it's working. We were in Canterbury (Kent) this weekend for a belated weekend away for Steve's birthday. It is so good to get back in touch with what is going on with you. Summer was busy and quick for us,as always, and I don't know where the time went. I loved the pictures of you. You look great! That picture of you in the hammock, looked a little like sherri. And then I was looking back at some of your last pictures, and I was noticing your sunflower paintings. Are those Dewey's? I am wanting some. I just repainted my kitchen/dinning/ living room yellow, and would like to accent it with blues and reds. Those sunflowers would be beautiful here, and they would mean alot to me. Does he sell and ship his art work? Aurora is the cutest little girl, how fun she must be. My kids are growing up way too quickly. Samantha is a sophomore now, I can't believe it. She just made the varsity volleyball team and is having a great time. it brings back lots of great memories of ISB and all the fun we had there. You knew that we got to go to Thailand at Xmas didn't you? Well, I visited the new ISB campus, and it is sooooo cool; it made me want to go back to school, or to ship my kids over. Unfortunately, I didn;t see anyone I knew except the janitor at the gym; and he told my kids what a good basketball player that I was. :) That was kind of fun. What a great time we had there. We were so lucky to get to live there and experience all of that. Well, I need to go. I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers. I love you Debbie! Keep up the great spirit. Kim

My favorite is the photo of Aurora in front of Dewey's sunflower painting also. But a close rival is the photo out your window. The light coming in from the window just makes me want to peek, or better yet to go, outside to see that beatiful garden. How wonderful to be surrounded by sunny flowers. Thanks for the postings. Hi, Debbie - I just read your recent updates. It has been a long time since I've had news. Sounds like you are feeling better and may have licked the persistent infection. I'm always so glad to hear that you are still hanging in there. The latest photos are beautiful! Love that Barbie birthday party! Aurora grows more beautiful every day. I have been fighting infections myself this summer. I had a urinary stent put in at the first of June and have had problems since then. Sorry I let your birthday get away from me. Happy, happy birthday anway. I'm hoping that you'll be back home and in good company really soon.
Speaking of back home, Erin, Ian and I will travel to Croaia this July with some good friends to scout out a suitable place to launch a new church plant. If all goes according to plan, we're looking at moving back to Croatia next summer in July for an indefinite period. I thought that would make you smile to think I might get to be back where my heart has remained for all these years. God is always so good to us. I especially love how He knows our hearts in so many intimate ways and then is so consistent to delight those loves.
This summer, we're especilly looking at sites along the Dalmatian coast ... so there will be an open door ... hopefully facing the Adriatic ... for the Franklins to come for a long summer visit when the loveliest water in the world is a wonderful warm.
Our Ian is growing more and more handsome every day. His slobbery smile stretches from ear to ear and he is as cuddly as a litle boy can be. He's contagiously happy and he's the easiest baby we've ever had. He'll turn three months old on Addie's 7th birthday, June 1st.
We just returned from a wet, but enjoyable camping trip on the Paluxy river in Dinosaur Valley State Park ... where incredibly clear dinosur tracks are visible in the limestone river bed ... there are even tracks where very clearly human footprints are visible beside the dinosaur ones ... dashing popular theories that the big lizards lived and died long before we humans climbed to the top of the food chain :) The history of the park and its fossil record and its relationship with the Smithsonian is delightfully scandolous!
Anyway ... it was fun to see how Aurora gets lovlier with every picture and to eually fun to visit Dewey's web site too. Really looking foreward to seeing you one day soon. We pray for you sooo often.

Dear Debbie,

a belated happy birthday to you. So sorry, that you had to be in hospital on that special day. I just read your update and saw those beautiful pictures and keep thinking how strong and courageous you are. I feel so much for you when you're talking about being away from Aurora and Dewey. It's hard to be far from those you need the most. I pray that you don't have to stay longer than 5 days in the hospital and that those french doctors treat you right.
What a wonderful idea to create a support group!It's actually what we would need here more, too. My german friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year had to fight all alone against sickness, incomprehensivness of doctors and stubborn health insurances. By the way, she always asks how you're doing and says hi. Yoga helped her a lot to get through all this and to find a balance of some sort. She's doing better right now and keeps on fighting, like you do.
I wish so much that I could give you some of my strength and energy. Please know that I'm thinking of you a lot and that I pray for your healing. You are not alone in this battle.

On this Good Friday, it brought us profound joy to read your latest encouraging updates. How we would love to spend part of the Easter weekend in England, too, and have a chance to spend some time with you. We have such a wonderful storehouse of memories of our time together in London.

In late November, we took all of the new Pepperdine faculty members and most of their spouses to Florence for a 9-day faith and learning seminar (funded by our Lilly grant). We stayed together at the Villa and shared most of our meals there, too. What a lovely serendipity to find ourselves surrounded by your lovely murals, Dewey, and to see Debbie's unmistakeable visage gleaming above our heads as we broke bread together. We are grateful for your gift.

Happy Easter, Aurora. We love seeing you grow and grow in the beautiful pictures your Dad posts for your many, many friends.

We continue to remember all three of you in our prayers. May God continue to heal you, Debbie, and to hold each of you in His tender care.

We neglected to stay updated this past month. What a joy to log on tonight and read about last month's series of blessings. Prayers are still rolling off our lips and from our minds. Wow. Meanwhile, on our side of the planet, the garlic is coming along and the pumpkin seeds Eloise and I planted in the worm compost are now some very happy little plants. Forest is passing from the newborn raisin-baby look to the gerber-baby look. He started laughing this week. Hee,hee. Lydia is outgrowing her jeans every 6 months; she doesn't look like a little girl anymore, though she still took her teddy bear to her check-up with the doctor this week. Life is good. God is good. I just finished reading a poetic story (The Sun, March 2003) by June Avignone, regarding her own breast cancer. She reminds me of you, a determined and informed woman (she calls herself a pain-in-the-ass patient who questions her doctor to death about how to avoid death). Her man is also a painter. An excerpt:

"I wonder how deep inside me the answers to my pending decisions are buried. Part of me knows that the cure goes beyond what their weapons [chemo & radiation] can touch, that I must search for it from the inside out."

I guess it is already tomorrow there in France. But I'll wish you a nice journey to Geneva anyway. Godspeed :)

My name is Lori Williams. I have been one of your adorable sister Tami's customers at Tadpoles since my little girl Carly was born. She is now 6 1/2 and has been joined by her brother and sister, 21 month old twins, Ryan and Sarah. Your Dad gave me your website address the other day and I have just spent several hours going through every page. First I have to say, You have a beautiful family! I thoroughly enjoyed all of your holiday pictures! (It made me miss Europe even more...I went to High School in London and worked as an Au Pair for a few summers in Monte Carlo.)
Your positive strength is AWE INSPIRING! My Mother,Sally MacLeod, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in January 2001 and chose to go to a clinic in San Diego for alternative treatments and not to do Chemo or radiation at all. She follows a very strict diet, carrot juice daily, vitamin C shots among other shots weekly and a daily regimen of an assortment of vitamins. She also takes Barley Green like you. She had a lumpectomy and is doing great! She feels good, looks good and more importantly shares your incredible positive strength. Prayer is working for her as well. We KNOW it works and see the results daily when we look at our "miracle twins"...They were born three and a half months early and spent almost four months at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Believe me, after seeing our tiny two pound babies on ventilators, then oxygen with more pic lines, feeding tubes and IV's than I care to remember, now toddling around giggling and playing like every other child well...whew!...WE KNOW PRAYER WORKS! I have added you to my prayer list as well as a website that all of my family and friends go on daily. I hope you'll feel even more powerful rays of healing coming from our "prayer connection" and that your health and my Mom's health only gets better, and better and better!

Hi: Wonderfull to here you are doing well and full of life. Just want you to know how special you are debbie
and I will never forget your visit to see Michaelene at
Brotmen medical center. It was kind and from the heart.
Michaelene passed away on May 5,2002 I can not describe
how difficult it was she was very special and brave and always had a smile for everyone.
I am doing well now but one week after michaelene's death
I was diagnosised with tonsil cancer and underwent 38 IMRT
radiation treatments It was the most difficult time of my

Roland had a good report at hospital yesterday, and I visited the dentist again and will go again on the 15th. 50 degrees in Tn. Listening to an old record and getting ready to cosmic dance through the day. My bad girl cat, silky, is hanging out by the keyboard wondering why I'm not doing my job (giving her constant attention). A good day in the life.

Marcie is redecorating a downstairs powder room. We have three sinks, 3 mirrors and a bunch of other stuff that will need to be returned shortly before the cows come home. She would buy one, change her mind, then buy another one. Hopefully, it will be done by Christmas. She does a great job.

I guess if Fritz and Tami have not arrived they will soon. I hope that the new year brings wonderful things to you and yours. May you leave the illness behind soon and live on in a new rebirth of wonder.

Dear Debbie,

It's great to see the new pix up on your site. I am glad that Fritz and Tami are coming soon to celebrate the bright new year. I wish we could join you.

Tn. is crisp, damp and alive. We are Christmas decorated, partied, caroled and feasted almost daily. God has blessed us in wonderful ways.

I am still veganing. What a change in eating and cooking. If you have any suggestions on cookbooks or tips on this way of eating, I'd appreciate it. I wish I could take some cooking classes. I feel o.k. but not revolutionized. No great changes yet. I was told that I would turn into a butterfly but I am still meandering in the larval stage.

I hope that you start feeling better soon. These health skirmishs must be very disheartening and difficult in many ways. Marcie and I pray for your healing every night and my class at church put aside a special prayer time for you last night.

I have always loved the line from Job, "Though he slay me, still will I trust in Him". It is hard to trust God when you are suffering and afraid. I admire Job's tight connection with the truth that God is trustworthy and good no matter how hard the climb. I wish I was always there. I hope that you are some of the time.

OK, let me try that again. I am glad to see the beautiful pictures of your family. As I said before I am glad to see that you are feeling good and having good energy. I am glad for your updates because I feel the power of God and prayer in both them and the messages that people post.
I recently had a chance to see some of Dewey’s work. It was breathtaking. Even the bath tub feet he did in gold were amazing to me… I hope that sometime I can see more of his work. At my house, we decorate with Elvis Presley and sports memorabilia. Pretty Scary! I think that Jimmy may be getting close to a breakthrough though, thanks to the trip to Mus’ee d’Orsay. I may be able to hang some real art soon (keep me in your prayers). We are doing fine and are enjoying the memories of our trip to France. I am glad that you will have some company for the Holidays. Hello, Debbie - Hope things are still going well for you and that those markers are staying down! Our group is intact, and everyone is doing o. k. Michele R. had the gamma knife procedure on brain mets and feels optimistic. She'll have an MRI in 6 wks. or so to determine the effectiveness of it. I have a new small lesion in my liver (where my mets have been) and will probably have radiofrequency ablation for that in the next few weeks. I'm grateful my Emory doc is recommending that. I continue to be asymptomatic so I'm glad there's an option besides chemo. You remain in my prayers. Your new pics are beautiful. Wish I could buy the sunflower painting. It's beautiful! Happy Thanksgiving! We were wondering what kind of weather you are having now and imagine that it is getting quite brisk about now--wonderful time of year. We have been having a lot of wind and days that are quite warm to very chilly the next. Typical though for this time of year. We travel to the high desert tomorrow to bring my folks here to enjoy the holiday with us, returning them on Friday. We'll stay overnight, then back on Saturday. Your Mom talked to G-Ma yesterday and updated her with much of the news in your 28th news. We are so thankful you are in such high spirts, have a home yu love being in and finally comforting doctors around you. We, of course, will continue to pray for God's healing hand. WE hear that Tami, Fritz Earl and Pam will be visiting for Christmas what a joy and blessing. G-Ma is sedttled into her new rooms and the rest of our house. I still have unpacking todo but we are going to a blind center next wednesday and they will be working with her on "living skills, kitchen etc." and some new conmputer so she can be in touch herself.

With regard to your friend with Krohn's disease, I have consulted with a good friend who suffers the same thing and this is what she says:-
"There are macrobiotic "cures" for Krohn's (more like amelioration, really) which can be sourced very easily via the Web - Google will give you thousands - but the best short-term help is from coconut! A couple of coconut maccaroons a day will have a dramatic effect on the symptoms, I promise."
She swears by a macrobiotic diet.

My wife suffers from Krohns disease and had part of her small intestine remove three years ago.Since then she has suffered from diarha and goes off her food.The last time this happened the Doc put her on a course of Steroids and bingo next day she was fine she has sufferd another bout recently and the Hospitol instucted the doctor not to Prescribe steriods is this normal and in your opinion does she suffer a difeciency that causes her to feel sick and lose her appitite.We are really worried and she is becoming depressed

Hello dear friends. I'm having a little bout with fatigue and mom took the girls for the afternoon. So I had a quiet moment and wanted to reach out and touch you across the continents and ocean. I miss you. We had our annual women's retreat this past weekend and Jan Hughes was our speaker. She was asking about your health, debbie, and we were talking about your grace and beauty. I love you. I keep praying for healing.
Things are going well in the Gerard abode. Lydia and I have both learned bunches in our 6 weeks of homeschooling --as much about ourselves and eachother as academics. It hasn't all been easy, but very worthwhile. I have lots of room for improvement, and am praying that God will help me in the area of priorities particularly.
Gene has been working very hard (what else is new?) at work and in school. Our church is going through a major transition and it is wearing us all out... but we have hope, because of the One we hope in. Gene has only about 6 1/2 weeks left of his graduate program... but it's gonna be a doozy, and so I'm gearing up for not seeing much of him these coming weeks.
I'm burgeoning with baby. And the big news is: it's a boy. Pretty cool to think about a little geno-weeno, eh? Of course we'll take whatever we get (that is, even if his personality is nothing like Gene)... but it delights me to think of raising a boy who has Gene as his role model. Can you tell I'm still in love?
Gene and I look at your pictures and sigh with the beauty of each of you, and sigh with desire to BE THERE at le meur someday with you. We keep hoping/dreaming.

It is so uplifting to hear about and see the pictures of your daily miracles. PRAISE GOD!!!! You all are looking fantastic. That French air really must agree with you. Grandma has moved back to Auburn and is in our home. Mickey and Debbie were here on leave from Korea to visit and we had a nice couple of days with them before they left for Roberts to enjoy his boys and hospitality. Not sure if you knew that Darren and Stella had a little boy in February. They were very excited that the birth washealthy. I guess when they say adopt one and God blesses you with another is very true. They have their own miraclel now. Diane is pregnant with her 1st. You can send a message to G-Ma at my e-mail address and I will be showing and reading to her your updates. Her eyes have gotten worse, but she is getting around.
Keep plugging away at the ivy on your home and within you and we praise God for evey day. I found the pictures of our picnic in the park in Oakland during the move. Please remind Aurora of her aunt Karen and Amanda says HI, too.

Hello Debbie! Thanks so much for updating your message. I was eager to know that you were home. So glad your white counts are up and that you are back on the Vit. C therapy. Hope the port will be going in this week so you can avoid the stick problems. I will be praying about the insurance problems with getting Zometa and Arimidex covered. Saying they only offer "temp. relief of symptoms" is a new one! Isn't that really true of many or maybe even all the drugs used to fight metastatic BC?! Will they then use that argument for pain meds? I can't imagine that their argument on those grounds would hold up anywhere! The Wellness Community group met yesterday, and several of us caught up on your situation. You are in everyone's thoughts. I'll bet Aurora will have a great time in school. With her precious personality, I'll bet she will adjust instantly and be loved by everyone there. Our grandson, Jake, who is about Aurora's age will be going 3 a. m.'s a week to Chamblee Methodist. I'm not sure who's looking forward to it more, Jake or our daughter, his mom. You remain in my prayers every day! Keep the updates coming.

I try to keep up on your news whenever I am back in town. I have been in Apple Valley, CA, quite a bit with my mom & stepdad. They both have lots of medical problems and are in need of assistance with many things. At least it is only a 90 minute drive from here, so if I have to get back home, it doesn't take long. We also just returned from a two-week vacation in which I got to spend time with my sister and my niece. You remain constantly in our thoughts & prayers. Much love, Judy & Glenn

Dearest Debbie,

Marcie and I adopted a Springer Spaniel named "Chance". He's black and white, 10 months old and a lot of fun and work. It has been a real experience. It's given me a little taste of what having a child would be like.

Our garden has produced some beautiful vegetables. I hope your crop has been good this year. It's very dry in TN and that has created a problem but we have kept it fairly well watered.

It will be wonderful to see you again. I hope we can solidify the concert date and that you will be able to come. We have some good folks working on the show.

Give my love to your own ones. Hope you have some good time everyday. You are a blessing to me and hundreds of other people who know you. We pray for you daily.

Hi Debbie! I so hope you were able to go home today. In any case, I have been praying that the infection would disappear as they found the perfect combo of antibiotics. It's great news that the vit C therapy seems to be working. I just finished a book by Linus Pauling and Ewan Cameron about that therapy. Interesting! I'm going to start taking a big oral dose of it every day. It can't hurt! My prayers continue to be with you, Dewey, Aurora, and your extended families. Love, Page
